We proudly declare Churchill’s 2024 Vintage Port, a wine that captures the exquisite harmony of a year defined by balance, patience, and precision in the Douro Valley.
When we first tasted the 2024 Ports after the vintage, my fellow winemaker, Ricardo Nunes and I realised that we had produced something very special. Churchill’s Vintage 2024 is unquestionably one of the best Vintage Ports we have produced to date. - Johnny Graham.
Our Winemaker and Production Director, Ricardo Pinto Nunes, describes this vintage port as “rich and fabulous, with impressive fruit definition and a long ageing potential. A wine so voluptuous you can’t stop tasting it!”
Produced from our old vineyards in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, with an average age over fifty years, the heart of the blend comes from Quinta da Gricha. Here, on steep schist slopes with a north-facing exposure, the vines produce fruit of remarkable purity and complexity.
THE YEAR
The growing season unfolded with an unusual sense of harmony in the Douro. A warm, wet winter replenished the soils, building vital water reserves that would sustain the vines throughout the year. Spring brought warmth and rain, encouraging a healthy and even development of the canopy. As summer arrived, the heat set in, but without the hydric stress that has marked more recent vintages. The vines continued their cycle steadily, benefiting from the reserves built earlier in the year. By September, cooler temperatures allowed for a complete ripening, preserving freshness while concentrating flavour. The result was fruit in exceptional condition, with both generosity and definition.
Harvest at Quinta da Gricha began on the 9th of September. In the following days, under clear skies and ideal conditions, selected parcels were brought to our granite lagares, that date from 1852, and were foot-trodden in the traditional way - a practice that remains at the core of Churchill’s philosophy. From the 15th to the 23rd of September, our lagares were filled with some of the finest fruit of the year, handled with care by our viticulture team.
