"Wild plum and berry flavours are concentrated and well rounded in this balanced, fresh-tasting red, which shows hints of chocolate on the finish.”

"1985 was our second declared Vintage and I remember well my first impressions of tasting the Churchill’s blend at the time. It was very much a fruit driven wine but with the power and tannic qualities of the Grade A vineyard components. Agua Alta brought an attractive red cherry element to the blend together with a hard vinous palate. The wet winter with higher-than-average rainfall gave the wines a natural acidity which now after 35 years keeps the blend fresh and vibrant. Although drinking well it will continue to age favourably for many years to come." - Johnny Graham, 2021.

Black color with violet nuances. Fresh carcter, with a green side on the nose. Rich and ripe on the palate, but with a vein of freshness.

Produced with old vines from the Cima Corgo sub-region in the Douro Valley, this Churchill's 1985 Vintage Port combines the more concentrated and powerful style of Quinta da Água Alta with the elegant and aromatic style of Quinta da Manuela and Quinta do Fojo.

THE YEAR

The winter was very wet in the Douro with higher than average rainfall in November, January and February. The flowering took place at the end of May in good conditions and there was particularly good berry set for the Touriga Nacional grape variety. The heavy winter rainfall resulted in a good crop of grapes.

The summer months were dry and hot with temperatures peaking in July but fine weather continued throughout August and September. The vines in the Cima Corgo region came under certain stress due to lack of moisture but the grapes at Água Alta were fully mature by the end of the second week in September. The vintage took place under perfect conditions.

The general quality of the 1985 Ports seems to be well above average. The good performance of the Touriga Nacional grape favoured the wines from Quinta do Fojo which are particularly aromatic and intense. All the wines have plenty of fruit and fresh natural acidity but are also quite hard on the palate which indicates a good tannic structure.
