"Wild plum and berry flavours are concentrated and well rounded in this balanced, fresh-tasting red, which shows hints of chocolate on the finish.”

"Following on from the 2016 declaration, the 2017 Vintage had to be an exceptional Year to be declared as a consecutive Port Vintage. And so, it was! From a production point of view, 2017 was one of the shortest years in the Douro due to the heat and lack of rainfall. It was the first time that we started picking our Port grapes in August. Considering the heat stress on the vines it is amazing that the 2017 Ports not only had concentration but also a fresh vein of natural acidity to give a robust tannic structure. They had gravelly tannins, not fine tannins, and this bodes well for the longevity of the wine. There is also a raw, wild character about our Churchill’s 2017 Vintage Port. Rather like the 2011, the Churchill’s 2017 is a striking Vintage that will give a great deal of pleasure for years to come." - Johnny Graham, 2021.

Very deep violet colour. Intense and focused on the nose, with layers of fresh blueberry aromas upfront. Exuberant and vinous on the palate, with fresh flavours of crushed blackberries in combination with a gravelly tannic structure and a vibrant natural acidity in a long lasting finish.

Produced with old vines (on average over 50 years old) from the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior sub-regions in the Douro Valley, of which the backbone comes from the old vines of Quinta da Gricha.

THE YEAR

The 2016-2017 viticultural year was considered very dry, with a cold and dry winter period and a very hot and extremely dry Springtime. The accumulated precipitation values from November to June were 46% below average in the Cima Corgo sub-region and 30% below average in the Douro Superior sub-region. The average temperature values from February till June were higher up to 3ºC considering the expected values for the season with the occurrence of several heat waves in April, May, and June. Due to the extremely dry climatic conditions, the pressure of Mildew and Oidium was very low, with the vines suffering from an extreme hydric deficit, with a strong impact in the average berry weight and therefore on the overall production, resulting in a very small crop of the finest quality.
