"Lovely aromas redolent of ripe plums, dark milk chocolate, and a touch of kirsch. Very pure, ripe, berry fruit, with firm, stony tannins that rise in the mouth, leading to a long, firm linear finish. Shows wonderful nerve and definition. A triumph from Churchill's."

94 Points, Richard Mayson, The World of Fine Wine.

"Deep, inky purple, with plenty of upfront black cherry, cassis, lilac and violets to the nose and palate. Lovely purity and marked freshness to the sweet, black-fruited palate, with liquorice and mineral undertones. The tannins are fine, but deceptively plentiful, sneaking up on you on the lilac-accented finish. With open-knit, fleshy ripe fruit and lovely freshness, it strikes me as an elegant mid-term proposition."

Churchill’s Quinta da Gricha 2018 Vintage Port has an inky black colour almost to the violet rim. On the nose, intense aromas of blueberries with hints of menthol and lavender. Focused, tight and precise on the palate, showing raw vibrancy and a stony character with a vein of natural acidity and a firm tannic backbone, resulting in an elegant pure and long-lasting vintage. - Johnny Graham and Ricardo Pinto Nunes.

Quinta da Gricha is located on the south bank of the river Douro between Pinhão and Tua with a North facing aspect. The 50-hectare property comprises a vineyard area of approximately 40 hectares with an altitude of 150-250 meters above sea level. This Vintage Port was sourced from the old vineyards.

In 2018, although our winemaking team decided not to declare a house vintage, due to the varying performance of vineyards in the Douro region, they felt that the quinta da Gricha grapes fully expressed the unique characteristics of the terroir.

Amongst the many innovations that have come out of the challenging spring of 2020, the way we presented our vintages to the port community has been one of the most exciting. On May 19, our winemakers shared a cask sample of this Churchill’s Quinta da Gricha 2018 Vintage Port in a live-streamed virtual port tasting. This digital launch allowed Churchill’s fans and port lovers to purchase tasting kits in advance and be the first to taste this bold new single quinta vintage.

All Churchill’s Quinta da Gricha Vintage Ports are produced in very small quantities. Churchill’s Quinta da Gricha 2018 Vintage Port total production is 454 cases (6 x 75cl), representing 8% of our port production that year.

THE YEAR

Churchill’s Quinta da Gricha 2018 Vintage Port was the result of an atypical growing year when compared to previous years’ cycles. The winter was cold and dry, with high rainfall in the spring. Summer started out cold and rainy but ended up extremely hot and dry. This climatic instability led to varying vineyard performance in the Douro region. In the case of Quinta da Gricha, vineyard yields were down by 30%, but the north-facing exposure and the breezy location allowed us to obtain a balanced and complete maturation, and to produce a wine that fully expresses the unique potential of this terroir.
